Facelift remains one of the most widely-known cosmetic surgeries in popular culture. But recent developments in cosmetic surgery have produced the thread lift procedure, which can provide many of the same benefits – if not more – than the oft-maligned and sometimes risky facelift.
What do these two procedures treat?
Thread lift and facelift are both cosmetic procedures designed to counteract the effects of gravity and ageing on the face. The areas targeted include the cheeks, jowls and neck regions.
What is a facelift?
A facelift is a surgical procedure that involves incisions to remove excess skin in the face’s lower third. The procedure involves tightening of the underlying tissue and reshaping of the surrounding areas in supplementary procedures. The intended result is a more youthful appearance.
What is a thread lift?
Although the procedure differs, the aim of a thread lift is essentially the same. Your doctor will use a local anaesthetic and utilise sanitary, biodegradable sutures that are threaded just beneath the skin. The doctor will then shape these to tighten the areas of your face that have been experiencing sagging.
The sutures used are completely harmless and will eventually be absorbed naturally by the body.
What are the advantages?
The biggest difference between thread lift and facelift is in the level of invasiveness. A facelift is an intensive surgical procedure that often requires a general anaesthetic and a considerable amount of post-operative care. Consequently, there is considerable downtime, discomfort and bruising as the face heals following the procedure – not to mention the considerable risk of complications.
Thread lifts, by comparison, are much less invasive and far less risky. The procedure takes up to an hour, with only some minor bruising and sensitivity. Since a local anaesthetic is used, normal activity can essentially be resumed the next day, with full recovery complete within a week.
Although the results aren’t permanent, they do last for up to 18 months and – in opposition to facelifts – thread lifts allow full facial mobility and expression.
Who uses thread lift?
Both men and women are popular users of the thread lift procedure. It is best recommended for those with mild to moderate sagging, and at least a moderate thickness of skin and body fat percentage. Before taking up a thread lift, however, you will be consulted in depth about any potential risks or mitigating factors.
Due to its low impact and low invasiveness, a thread lift can be administered in conjunction with other procedures. Ensure you speak openly with your doctor about tailoring your treatment to meet your specific needs.
