What to Expect From Your Dermal Filler Treatment

Posted by Dr Theva in Injectables.

Dermal fillers are becoming more popular than ever; they can smooth out wrinkles, make your lips look fuller and plumper, correct age related volume depleted cheeks and even shape your chin and jawline. With its increase in popularity, it’s also becoming much easier to find a clinic/salon that provides the treatment with someone offering a “treatment special” on every street corner and in every shopping centre.

But despite its popularity, you still shouldn’t make the decision lightly.  While dermal filler treatments are fast, relatively painless, and require very little recovery time, it is always beneficial for patients to understand how these treatments work before opting for them.

In this article I will aim to answer your questions, so you are able to make an informed decision about dermal fillers and if it’s the right treatment for you.

DO Take the Time to Understand the Treatment

What are dermal fillers? Dermal fillers are a gel-like substance that is injected under the skin. This minimally invasive cosmetic procedure helps to restore volume, smooth lines and enhance facial features.

Dermal fillers can be composed of a variety of substances, some naturally occurring and some synthetic. One of the most common is hyaluronic acid (HA). HA is a naturally occurring substance found in our body and generally keeps the skin hydrated and volumized.

Why is this procedure needed? As we get older your face naturally loses its elasticity and facial volume. But it’s not just aging, additional factors that affect the ageing process of your skin can include sun exposure, genetics, smoking and other lifestyle choices.

The treatment is commonly used to fill in the deep undereye and temple hollows, help support and lift the cheek bones and cheeks, contour the jawline, enhance lips and smooth out lip lines and nasolabial folds. The treatment creates a natural, rejuvenated and refreshed look.

DO Get to Know Your Cosmetic Injector

It’s important to mention that not all cosmetic injectors are created equal. Finding the right experienced Cosmetic Physician to perform your dermal filler procedure is key.  Choosing someone with a substantial understanding of facial anatomy, an eye for detail and an ability to provide a natural look to perform your treatment is the difference between reaching your desired results or a botched job.

There are many different types of dermal fillers and each has its own unique density, longevity, and texture, which means a particular one may be more or less suited to a specific area of the face or desired result. Your injector needs to be familiar with the variety of available fillers and their respective injection techniques.

An experienced cosmetic injector is able to effectively evaluate the area/s of concern and understand what results you hope to achieve from the treatment. Then confidently choose the right product, quantity, technique and correctly position the dermal filler for the best result. It’s not just point and shoot.

What’s also important to consider is the preferred style of your cosmetic injector. Some prefer to aim for big bold results while others, such as myself, prefer more subtle natural results. Ask to see your injectors previous patients before and after photos to see if their style suits you and your desired results.

DO Have a Consultation

Ensure you get a thorough consultation where you are able to discuss your goals and where the risks are explained and honestly discussed with you. Find someone you feel comfortable with and who you trust won’t overlook your concerns.

Know what is being injected into your body. During your consultation ask what product will be used during your treatment. Only high-quality TGA approved products should be used during your treatment.

Before we begin your treatment, we will be taking photos of the treatment area. The photos are taken so we are able to effectively compare the before and after results. Don’t worry these won’t be shared anywhere without your consent.

We also clean your face with an antiseptic solution to limit infections at the injection site.

DO Give Yourself Enough Time for the Treatment

While anti-wrinkle injections only take a few minutes, dermal fillers are different.

Dermal fillers are used to sculpt your face. There is an art to it, and you should never rush an artist.

I prefer to take my time and go slowly. I inject a little filler and then take a look. Then inject some more. The process is slower, but the end result is a masterpiece. I aim for a naturally balanced and harmonious look.

The discomfort is usually minimal for most treatments, but you can request a topical numbing gel or numbing ice if you are anxious about the potential pain.

After the treatment is finished, we use a Green LED light on your face for 20 minutes. This reduces the risk of bruising and inflammation and has a relaxing effect after treatment.

Once home we advise putting ice on the area to minimise bruising and drink plenty of water. You may take Panadol if there is any discomfort. But stay away from anti-inflammatories or alcohol for 24 hours post treatment. Both can thin the blood which can lead to more bruising and swelling after dermal filler injections.

Refrain from intense physical activity for between 24 and 48 hours after the injection and expect some swelling post treatment. This usually takes 1 week to subside.

I will also be giving you a phone call 24-72 hours post treatment to check in and make sure there are no serious issues. You will also have access to my personal mobile number to call me anytime if you have any concerns.

DO Have A Follow Up Appointment

I usually schedule an in-clinic appointment 2 weeks post treatment once the swelling has subsided. It’s not only to ensure your wellbeing but also to make sure that we are both satisfied with the end result. I want to be happy with the end result as much as you.

My patient’s satisfaction is very important to me. If you are unhappy with your results then it is my responsibility to fix that. I guarantee that I will be by your side throughout the whole journey until your desired results are achieved.

Potential Side Effects and complications

Dermal fillers are considered to be safe, but side effects can occur.

The most common problems include:

  • skin rash, itching, or pimple-like eruptions
  • redness, bruising, bleeding, or swelling

The below are rare and their occurrence is dependent on the experience of your injector:

  • undesirable appearance, such as asymmetry, lumps, or overcorrection of wrinkles
  • skin damage that causes a wound, infection, or scarring
  • ability to feel the filler substance under the skin
  • blindness or other vision problems
  • death of skin cells due to loss of blood flow to the area

How long do dermal fillers last?

Patients often ask how long do their dermal fillers last.  The short answer is approximately 6 to 12 months. The long answer depends on what filler was used, where it was injected and how your body naturally breaks down and metabolises the substance.

Several things can affect the longevity of your dermal filler such as smoking, sunlight exposure and excessive alcohol consumption.

DO Have Top Up Appointments

The best way to maximise the longevity of your dermal filler results is to have the next treatment before the effects of the last treatment wear off. Timing your maintenance dermal filler treatments ensures that your rejuvenated, youthful appearance will be maintained for longer.
