One of the biggest misconceptions I see in my clinic is that cosmetic treatments and non-surgical skin rejuvenation treatments are only for women. This may have been true a decade ago, but now more and more of my cosmetic patients here at my cosmetic clinic in Melbourne are men.
In the last decade, there’s been a shift in the attitude of men seeking a younger, refreshed and well-rested appearance, and it’s become more socially acceptable for men to be concerned about looking older. But this concern is more practical than just vain.
In the busy and competitive corporate world, youth equates to more productivity and speedy results. Looking younger simply makes men more professionally desirable. Also, more time spent on social media, dating apps, and zoom means men are looking at themselves a whole lot more—and so are other people.
Corresponding with changing attitudes are the advancements in the types of treatments available. Men are looking for non-surgical cosmetic treatments that offer quick fixes with no downtime and that bring natural, refreshed results immediately.
Here are my top 5 non-surgical Skin Rejuvenation Treatments for Men that I recommend to my patients.
Skin Rejuvenation Treatment for Men #1: Anti-Wrinkle Injections
What is it? – The treatment involves a series of botulinum toxin injections into your facial muscles.
What it Does – The injection essentially blocks the message from your nervous system that tells your muscles to contract and instead tells them to relax. This relaxation of your muscles is what reduces the appearance of wrinkles.
Treatment Time – Getting anti-wrinkle injections takes only a few minutes. A small needle is used to inject, so there is only minor discomfort.
Downtime – No downtime but may be minor bruising.
Lasting Effects – It generally takes 7 to 14 days to take full effect and will last 3 to 4 months.
Dr T’s Comments – Men are using wrinkle injections to remove ‘grumpy old man’ stress lines and create a healthier appearance. It’s more about a refreshed, rejuvenated appearance than cosmetic alterations.
The most common places men get anti-wrinkle injections are:
- in the corners of the eyes to prevent crow’s feet
- between the eyebrows to target frown lines
- in the forehead to reduce creases
- around the mouth to target laugh lines
Skin Rejuvenation Treatment for Men #2: HydraFacial
What is it? – HydraFacial is a medical-grade skin resurfacing treatment, achieving the results of an advanced facial in just 30 minutes. It’s essentially a dermabrasion treatment with a very, very light chemical peel.
What it Does – It combines a deep clean and exfoliation, extractions and a hydrating, antioxidant rejuvenation for instantly brighter, cleaner and clearer skin. It’s soothing, refreshing, non-irritating, and immediately effective.
Treatment Time – A HydraFacial treatment can be completed in just 30 minutes.
Downtime – No downtime. No side effects.
Lasting Effects – The hydrating effects and radiant skin tone may last 5 days or longer.
Dr T’s Comments – HydraFacial is not suggested for serious lines or wrinkles. It also won’t stop the skin from sagging, but it is the fastest and painless way to get a refreshed and rejuvenated tone to your skin.
Treatments are recommended monthly to improve the appearance of fine lines, blackheads, oily or clogged skin and pigmentation issues such as brown patches.
Skin Rejuvenation Treatment for Men #3: Laser Genesis
What is it? – Laser Genesis is a non-invasive laser treatment that uses micro-pulse technology. It’s excellent for anti-ageing, scars, pigmentation, skin rejuvenation, redness, and so much more. It’s gentle, quick, painless and can be done in a lunchtime break.
What it Does – This heat-based laser stimulates the body’s natural healing processes to boost collagen growth resulting in a more youthful skin tone and texture.
Treatment Time – Most Laser Genesis treatments only take about 30min, but it depends on the number of areas being treated.
Downtime – Zero downtime and no recovery. Some patients may experience temporary redness, which will dissipate that same day.
Lasting Effects – Patients can expect their results to last between 6 – 12 months.
Dr T’s Comments – The best part is you will be able to go back to work or continue your day straight afterwards. That means you can return to the office without anyone knowing you just had a laser session. That is a big benefit since other lasers can leave skin raw and red for some time. With Laser Genesis, you don’t have to suffer to get great results. Patients love that.
Skin Rejuvenation Treatment for Men #4: Dermal Fillers
What is it? – Dermal fillers are based on hyaluronic acid, which is a substance that naturally exists in your body. Injecting dermal filler into the skin works to plump and restore volume to the skin and minimise the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by ‘filling’ them back in.
What it Does – As your face changes over time, dermal fillers allow you to control your looks subtly as you age. Dermal fillers can be used to smooth away facial lines and wrinkles, create volume and shape facial contours, such as cheeks and chin, and revitalise the skin.
Treatment Time – The average appointment usually doesn’t last longer than 30-60 minutes.
Downtime – Patients are free to return to work directly after their appointment though swelling and some bruising is possible.
Lasting Effects – 6 months to 2 years. Depending on the type of filler used and how your body metabolises it.
Dr T’s Comments – Aging affects men and women differently. The most common signs of ageing we see in men are deep forehead creases, fine lines caused by UV exposure, drooping in the mid-face and the development of jowls around the jawline.
The most popular treatment area for most of my male patients is dermal filler injections for the cheeks and tear trough. Filler in both areas gives a refreshed, well-rested and rejuvenated look.
Skin Rejuvenation Treatment for Men #5: Chemical Peels
What is it? – Chemical peels are cosmetic treatments where a chemical solution can be applied to the face, hands, and neck. The chemical causes the skin to exfoliate and eventually peel off. They’re used to improve the appearance or feel of the skin.
What it Does – All chemical peels work by removing a layer of damaged skin. There are different types of peels: light, medium, and deep. Mild peels remove the top layer of sun damage, while stronger peels remove cells at a deeper level.
Treatment Time – Can last anywhere from 30 minutes to 90 minutes
Downtime – There is some recovery time depending on the severity of your treatment. Common side effects are temporary and include redness, dryness, stinging or burning, and slight swelling. And, of course, eventual skin peeling.
Lasting Effects – A light, or superficial, peel produces results that usually last between one and two months. A medium peel’s results will last between two and six months, and the results of a deep peel will last forever.
