Do your eyes look hollow or sunken? Are dark circles under your eyes making you look old, tired or unhealthy? If you’re looking for a non invasive cosmetic procedure that can rejuvenate your sunken eyes and give you a fresher, more youthful and healthier appearance then an under eye filler procedure could be the answer.
However, tear trough filler isn’t for everyone. If you’re considering eye filler, you should think it over carefully to ensure the treatment is right for you and take the time to prepare. Below, I go through the basics of under eye fillers to help you make an informed decision and how you can prepare for an under eye filler procedure to ensure the best results.
What Causes Dark Circles and Bags Under the Eyes?
Darkness in the tear trough area is often genetic, and some people naturally have sunken eyes to varying degrees, which cast shadows underneath the lid.
But there are a number of other issues that can also cause dark circles and bags under the eyes.
- poor sleep patterns
- UV exposure
The natural ageing process is the biggest cause of sunken eyes and a dark, hollow look in the tear trough area. As we age, the pockets of fat located in the cheek area begin to droop and their gradual descent causes a deep separation between the under eye area and the cheeks.
It’s important to consider that a under eye fillers will also not completely treat under eye bags but may, however, reduce their appearance.
If your dark circles are caused by pigmentation in your skin filler won’t help to reduce this; instead, it can heighten it.
What are Under Eye Fillers?
Under eye fillers are injectable hyaluronic acid dermal fillers, that can be used to treat volume loss and dark areas underneath the eyes.
Non-surgical and minimal invasive, tear trough fillers are an effective way to treat fine lines, the hollowed-out look under the eyes and dark circles, for a soft and natural effect.
What Is an Under Eye Filler Procedure?
An under eye filler treatment is a quick and easy facial rejuvenation procedure and is essentially a cosmetic procedure. However, it is not covered by health insurance.
Your under eye area is made up of very thin skin and tiny blood vessels. Therefore, Your treatment should be performed by a board certified plastic surgeon, cosmetic injector or cosmetic physician.
Make sure you choose an injector with the right qualifications and plenty of experience. A tear trough filler treatment requires extra precision and is not a job for just any injector. Experience is essential to your success in this particular anatomy treatment area.

1 Week Before
- Avoid blood thinning medications 1 week prior to your tear trough filler treatment such as Aspirin, Advil, Aleve, Nuprin, Bufferin, Ibuprofen, etc.
- Stop herbal supplements such as fish oil supplements, ginkgo, ginseng, St. John’s Wort, garlic pills, etc. (a multivitamin is ok to continue).
- Discuss any current medications you are taking with your general practitioner and if they will be affected by the treatment.
A Few Days Before
- Avoid salty foods a few days before and after the treatment. Excess sodium causes the body to retain water, which in turn can worsen swelling.
24 Hours Before
- Minimize alcohol consumption for a minimum of 24 hours before injectable treatment. Alcohol can thin the blood making it easier for bruising to occur.
Is an Under Eye Filler Procedure Painful?
An under eye filler procedure is usually short and pain-free. Your injector normally applies a topical anesthetic to the treatment area. Then, after about fifteen minutes, they will inject the undereye filler. The entire procedure usually takes about fifteen minutes.
Some patients find the sensation of getting under eye filler strange or mildly uncomfortable, but usually, it’s not intensely painful.
Tear Trough Filler Recovery and Downtime?
You can go straight back to your day after your under eye filler procedure. The under eye area will be tender to the touch for a few days and may look swollen. You may also have some small bruising on the cheek under the eye. This may last a few days to a week.
To reduce the potential of bruising and to ensure you get the most from your treatment, follow the after-care instructions provided. These will include avoiding drinking alcohol and strenuous exercise for a few days, staying out of extreme heat (e.g saunas), resist touching the area of applying makeup for a few hours following the treatment as the filler settles in.
