How Long Do Dermal Fillers Last?

Posted by Dr Theva in Anti-Aging, Injectables.

When patients decide to take action to combat the signs of ageing, injectable cosmetic treatments are usually the first choice for long-lasting results with no downtime. One of the most common questions I hear from patients at Dr T Aesthetics here in Melbourne is, “How long do dermal fillers last?”

Though dermal fillers are long-lasting, they are not permanent. Generally Dermal Fillers last approximately 12 months but results can differ from patient too patient based on several different factors. But before we get into the nitty-gritty affecting the life span of your dermal fillers, let us first cover the basics.

How Long Do Dermal Fillers Last

The Basics Behind Dermal Fillers

As the signs of ageing become apparent in fine lines and wrinkles, you may start considering non-surgical rejuvenating treatments such as dermal fillers. These injectables are designed to eliminate or reduce the appearance of fine lines, skin folds, and wrinkles.

Ageing effects are unavoidable. When you are young, collagen and hyaluronic acid (HA) levels in your skin are far higher. They provide greater elasticity and stability to your facial structure. As you age and your body slows down the production rate, you start to notice wrinkles, folds, and a generally tired appearance.

There are many different types of fillers on the market. Most of them are hyaluronic acid (HA) based. A dermal filler treatment involves a gel-like substance injected into target areas of the face with a cannula or needle. The filler plumps the skin from the inside out and replaces lost fat and proteins to smooth lines, wrinkles, and volumise hollow areas.

While some studies have shown that HA fillers may encourage collagen production, these “line fillers” or “skin fillers” usually work by adding support to the wrinkle at its base. The filler particles eventually get broken down by the body, metabolise and need to be replaced.

What Are Dermal Fillers

How Long Do Dermal Fillers Last?

Since a large part of my practice is focused on injectable aesthetic treatments, such as dermal fillers, I regularly get asked “how long do dermal fillers last?”

The best answer is simply, “It depends.”

Result duration can significantly differ from patient to patient based on several factors, including the type of filler used, the patient’s metabolism level, and their cosmetic injector experience.

Dermal filler duration also depends on the area the filler is placed. If the filler is placed in a high movement area, such as the lips, then the filler will not last as long as your earlobe, for example.

Yes!  You can get dermal fillers on your ear lobe!

4 Factors That Determine How Long Dermal Fillers Last

1 – Types of Dermal Filler Used

The variation in the length or result is primarily due to different materials used in each brand’s formulation, along with the consistency of the filler (thicker fillers tend to last longer).

There are several types of dermal fillers. The most common are hyaluronic acid fillers (a natural substance found in the body). Some may last between six months to a year. While others have been clinically proven to last up to two years.

Synthetic wrinkle fillers are sometimes also used, but they come with some potential risks. They do not consist of anything found naturally in the skin, and they may result in permanent disfigurement if injected incorrectly. However, the results last much longer than most other fillers.

When choosing dermal fillers, there are several factors to consider. Personal preference, amount and depth of wrinkles treated, your budget, and your injector’s recommendations.

Dermal Filler Treatment Area

2 – Part of the Face Being Treated

Location on the face of the injector influences how long the filler lasts. For example, filler injected under the eyes tends to last longer than filler injected into the lips because there is less facial movement there.

Below is an approximate breakdown of the duration for each area.

Lip Fillers :

There are many fillers for lip augmentation (i.e., lip injections). They typically last around 6-9 months. Lips, and the area around the month, are considered a high movement area. Dermal fillers are a gel held together by bonds. Constant movement will cause these bonds to break down and be absorbed into the body.

Under Eye Fillers :

Hyaluronic acid-based fillers used to treat the eyes (including the tear trough area). Fillers can last from 9 to 12 months.

Cheek Fillers :

These are one of my favourite facial rejuvenation treatments as they give your skin structure, plumpness and more natural-looking results. Depending on the type that you choose, cheek fillers can last from 9 to 12 months.

Marionette Lines :

Results for marionette lines dermal filler treatments typically last from 9 to 12 months.

Temple Fillers :

The longevity of results depends on the client’s metabolism, age and the amount of filler used to treat the volume loss in the temples. The effects of treatment usually last for 9 to 12 months.

Chin Fillers :

Chin augmentation treatments often last between 9 to 12 months.

3 – Different Patients, Different Metabolism

Everybody processes hyaluronic acid fillers at different rates. Though, those with a fast metabolism appear to run through them quicker than others.

The metabolic rate correlates to an individual’s muscle mass and level of exercise, for the most part. In other words, the fitter you are, the faster your metabolism.

4 – The Experience of Your Injector

Today, cosmetic injectables are often deemed the most effective non-invasive way to restore facial volume, shape and balance to your appearance. Though dermal fillers and anti-wrinkle injections are widely performed and offered by various physicians and specialists, choosing the right injector remains the most crucial ingredient to successful treatments and the longevity of your results.

I’m surprised at how many people research their cosmetic physician extensively when researching a surgical facelift. But they don’t seem to do the same when choosing their cosmetic injector for their dermal filler treatments.

Due to dermal fillers’ sensitive and delicate nature, you want to be sure that you are injected by someone with years of experience in each treatment area’s nuances.

Investigating the experience of your cosmetic injector is key.  Ask about their injecting knowledge and their understanding of facial aesthetics & anatomy. How long have they been practising, and what have they done to expand their knowledge & injection techniques.

This is vital to their professional growth and your long-lasting results.
